If he died before Civil Registration began in 1855 the Burial records in parts of Ayrshire are pretty poor ( Tarbolton's known parish records show deaths/burials from 1783-1785 and then 1829-1848 )

Checking the Ayrshire Burials index shows only 2 James McWhinnie's buried before 1855 one a weaver the other a "seafaring man"

Death records on SP in Ayrshire are very limited, Tarbolton only has parish records 1783-1785 &
1829-1848.
There are no McWhinnie deaths. There are a few baptisms after 1778 but no James 1761 in Tarbolton

The only birth and death of a James in the county but probably not the one you are seeking.
MCWHINNIE   JAMES   JAMES MCWHINNIE/AGNES DOWNIE    Baptised 18/10/1761   Ayr

MCWHINNIE   JAMES   Died 19/08/1832   Ayr

One tree on Ancestry records James mother as Agnes Downie but that might be because of the lack of any other records.

Unfortunately you may need to widen your search outside of Ayrshire but this is a good example of different sources producing different results

Scotlands people - 78 McWhinnies's  rising to 85 if M*Whin* is used
- both lists only contain a total of  3 x James

Ayrshire Burials index - 98 x McWhinnie + 2 McWhinie  containing 4x James (3 adults and 1 child)

3 James McWhinnies are buried in Newton Green Burial ground in Ayr

Sadly none of the individuals identified match your age/date of birth and none of them in Tarbolton although given the poor state of the records there  that is no guarantee that it didnt happen there

It should be noted that Tarbolton Parish Church was not built until 1821, so the baptism in Ayr might be worth a look.

Colin

That is only the "current" building - there was a church there from Medieval times

But given the dates and the fact that Tarbolton birth records are fairly intact from 1730 to 1820 it may be wise to widen the birth search as well

I agree but after living there for a few years the close proximity to Ayr should not be ignored,

What evidence do you have for him being born in Tarbolton?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
