occupation 'busb ??
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 08:51 GMT (UK) »
I read the first marriage as saying "Francis FLEXMUR 'busb. of South Mimms in Middlesex Br (bachelor) & Sarah WENHAM Spr (spinster)"

The first and last marriages seem to say that the husband's occupation is " 'busb".

There seems to be an apostrophe in front of the second description so I'm guessing that this word either ends in "busb", or has that in the middle.

What do you think?

What occupation is meant?

Thanks

I suspect that it is "husb" = husbandman.

A Dictionary of Old Trade, Titles and Occupations:

Husbandman, husbandus = farmer who worked with animals.  Also a general name for a farmer in the 1700s.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

In fact if you look at the first and last letters of the word in question you can see that they are formed differently.

I agree it's husb[andman].

Thanks to all.

Husbandman seems fair enough. :)
