Emily Avery B1866
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 14:24 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage cert that says Emily is 19 in 1885. Emily marries James Rider
It also appears to say that her fathers' trade is to do with Ivory

in 1891 census it shows, I think, that neither James or Emily know where they were born. Location is NK - does this stand for NOT KNOWN?

So I have looked for an 1881 census. I can find a William who is an ivory turner living in Islington but no listing of Emily.
I can go back to 1871 and find William again but this time with all his children including an Emily born 1868.

Could they be the same person/people if the marriage cert show she is 19 in 1885, surely she would be 17?

They don't appear to have their first child until 1887 so not urgent rush to get married.

Oddly there are two registrations for daughters named "Louisa":

Louisa Avery, mmn Henderson, Jun qtr 1863 Islington (still alive, aged 17, in the 1881 census)
Louisa Avery, mmn Henderson, Jun qtr 1868 Islington

Perhaps the younger one is actually Emily?

So, it is possible that Emily was actually 17 when she got married?

An Emily Avery, daughter of William Avery of Newhall St, was enrolled at Anglers' Gardens School, Islington on 27 March 1876 - birthdate recorded as 28 March 1867.

If this is correct there doesn't seem to be a corresponding birth registration.

If it is a year out and she was actually born on 28 March 1868 then that would match both the second Louisa Avery birth registration, and Emily's stated age of 13 in the 1881 census.

??? Curious. AVERY tends to catch my eye. Because, one of my lads ~ inexplicably born in London ~ married an Avery, from Sussex.

They married in Portsmouth ~ what should be my boys natural home town.

Never have fathomed how all that's supposed to link up. Paper work can't be denied, so, there it is.

S'pose, thinking about it though, there would have been Avery's all over the place.
