Looking for information about Fanny/Frances Clayton/Betts
« on: Thursday 28 March 19 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for information about Fanny/ Clayton

I believe she was born at Caythorpe in 1860 to parents John Clayton and Jane Clarke

I have her on 1861 census,at Caythorpe  and 1871 census still at Caythorpe,

In 1877 she had an illegitimate son Edwin, and then she married a John Betts in June 1880, and on the 1881 census the 3 of them were living at Carlton Scroop Grantham, and at this time Edwin's surname was Betts

I cannot find an 1891 census for any of them.

I do believe that Edwin then went back to being called Clayton, married Pheobe Ann Ogden lived at Neward 1901 and Swinton Rotherham in 1911. and Died 1918.

I have no idea what happened to Fanny Betts or when she might have died.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards
Chistine

Have you ruled out the 1885 death for Fanny Betts aged 23

Thank you for your replies, I have just looked at the death you mention Carole, and I think that could be her I hadn't picked up Stamford before, but it does cover parts of the Lincolnshire area,

Thanks again for your help.

The death may not be her

1891 - the children are transcribed as Betts by Ancestry, but the image says Lawson  [added: living in Caythorpe]

John Betts    31 - ironstone miner b Caythorpe, married
Martha Lawson    34 - housekeeper, single b Bruton Ledwardine
Anne Louisa Lawson    9
Florence Lawson    7
Ethel Lawson    5
Sarah Lawson    10/12

Martha Lawson died in 1892 and John Betts in 1899

If Fanny had died in 1885 there would have been nothing stopping John from marrying Martha unless he didn't know she had died.   If she moved to another area in Lincs that could account for possible lack of knowledge

However - there is an 1882 marriage in Lincs between Frederick Betts and Fanny Dickinson

Fanny was born March qtr 1862 Saltby Leicestershire and Frederick 1858 Stamford but I can't find either in 1891 and there are no Betts/Dickinson births

Thanks for your help Mabel, Jon, and Carole.

Jon the info you have found is an eyeopener.

Wonder if I'll ever get to find where Fanny and Edwin were in 1891, and when she actually died.
