Memorial at West Stow
« on: Saturday 30 March 19 17:31 GMT (UK) »
Am I reading this memorial properly?

Thomas Croftes (1540-1612) married Susan Poley

His parents were Edmund Croftes (c1520-Feb 1557/8and Elizabeth Kittson

ECs parents were Sir John Croftes (c1490 Jan 1158/9) and Rose Sampson

Sir JCs father was John Croftes

And his father was Thomas Croftes and a lady with the surname Ginne and was lord of the manor in 1273

I cannot see how Thomas could have even been born in 1273

Your extract has: "...which Sir John Croftes was the son of John Croftes descended of Thomas the son of John Croftes, who married the daughter and heir of Ginne..."

Note the word 'descended' - it doesn't say he was Thomas's son but implies an unspecified number of intervening generations.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson
