Gotsinger Family Lambeth London 1770
« on: Monday 01 April 19 11:19 BST (UK) »
Hi
This is a bit of a long shot but here goes -
John Frederick Gotsinger B 1778 London married Sarah Cock (Cook) B 1780 D 1856 Lambeth London.  Looking for any details of the parents of John and parents of Sarah in particular her mother’s maiden name.  There is a daughter Sarah Gotsinger born 8 August 1803, married 1821 (William Bragg Martin B 1801) many children all with Bragg recorded in their names, however Sarah died very young on 13 April 1849.  These would be very old records to find and I don’t have Parish details so any help would be awesome,  🤗🤗🤗🤗
Thank you so much for reading my request
Kind regards
Maureen

Hi ,let's give it a try
Sarah bapt at Bermondsey 4 Sep 1803 father Frederick and mother Sarah leather dresser B'st.
The couple married at St James Garlickhithe  C of London 4 Aug 1801.
Sarah the daughter married William Bragg at Newington 18.3.1821.

The 1851 census gives mother Sarah as born 1780 in Bermondsey widowed school mistress. She is at Edward St Bermondsey.
There's a burial for her at Enfield St Andrew 29 Sep 1856 of Leather Market Surrey age 77 years

I can 't find a burial for him but could Frederick have been buried at Enfield?

Only possible baptism I can see is in Prussia-Petzig Brandeburg
Joannes Friederich Goetzens  21 Feb 1779 to Michael Goetszens and Anna Dorothea Sandemann

Thank you so much for all the information Ciderdrinker  😀😀😀
A question about Sarah Gotsinger (Cock) B1780 - when her daughter Sarah was Baptised in 1803 the mother Sarah was recorded as being a Leather Dresser B’st however the 1851 Census states she was then a widowed School Mistress.  Is it possible that Sarah could have had such a dramatic change in circumstances from a leather worker to a teacher?   Also can you help me with any details of the parents of Sarah Gotsinger (Cock) B1780 Bermondsey.
Many thanks 🤗🤗🤗
Maureen

This chap in the 1802 Holden's Directory is presumably John Frederick:

Hi
It's not Sarah Cock/Gotsinger ,the mother who is a leather dresser it's her husband John Frederick Gotsinger.
After his death presumably ,his widow Sarah had to find work and as she could read and write ,did some teaching.

Sarah left a will, found under the name Godsinger.

England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 for Sarah Godsinger
PROB 11: Will Registers
1855-1859
Piece 2240: Vol. 16, Quire Numbers 751-800 (1856)

I can make out some of her granddaughters names: Elizabeth Sarah Bragg Martin, Harriett Bragg Martin, maybe a Martha..... it's in that fancy lawyer writing where it is hard to decide whether it is indeed written in English or not, (if you stare at a word long enough, it is in English), but my eyes aren't up to the task.

It won't help in the quest for parents names, but just thought I'd point out it's existence.

The 1851 "school mistress" is puzzling.  The address matches what I think it says on the will, but Sarah signed with an "X".  Probably why she didn't catch the misspelling of Gotsinger as well.  She must have had other duties at the school that didn't include reading/writing.
