BUT, we can't see from that snip where there is any reference to a wife!  :-\  Or am I not seeing the same image as anyone else?

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I can't see anything on that piece of paper that refers to a wife.

Could you perhaps direct us to exactly which part of the paper you need help with?  :)

I have just posted on the other thread.   :)  The symbol  (not equal to)  indicates that there is a common law marriage.

I posted a snip and the following:
I am fairly sure that the 'not equal to' symbol on that uploaded document is to indicate that there was a common law marriage between the un-named woman and Jim Champion, in other words, not a formal marriage.

What is the significance of the N2136 number?

I am not sure if the following pdf from the WA State Records office is specifically relevant to this thread, but just in case it is,

http://www.sro.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/cpaf-aliasindex.pdf

Champion (m)
Shark Bay
file no. 37/1903

I suspect 1903 is likely the year  :)
