What happened to Daniel McCormick? Glasgow.
« on: Tuesday 02 April 19 16:08 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I am looking for any information on Daniel McCormick, my 4x Great Grandfather. He married Mary Ann 'Domigan' on 28th April 1833 in Glasgow, although it says 'Warrant not delivered' on the parish record.

On Daniel & Mary's son's, also Daniel, marriage record in 1856 to Mary Fleming, Daniel is listed as a Brickmaker and Mary 'Dunigan' is deceased. By the time of Daniel jr.'s death in 1894 aged 57, Daniel sr. is now deceased.

I take it from the information given, that Daniel sr. died between 1856 and 1894, yet I cannot find a death record. Also, I can find no census returns.

Any help would be appreciated,

Keelan

The name Daniel was interchangeable with Donald, so try using Donald. I got stuck for a long time with one ancestor whose name was Daniel but was also known as Donald.
Sinclair: Lanarkshire & Antrim; McDougall: Bute; Ramsay: Invernesshire; Thomson & Robertson: Perthshire; Brown: Argyll; Scott: Ayrshire: Duff: Fife.

Might also be worth checking the Irish records at https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Keelan (still love the name)  ;)

Did Daniel Jnr. have any siblings who married/died with info. to narrow down dates for Daniel Snr's death?

Hi Keelan,

Daniel McCormick's age at death gives him a year of birth circa 1836/37.
Does this match the year of birth his age on marriage certificate (and any censuses you've found him on would give?).

Looby :)

Where exactly in Glasgow was the 1856 marriage, what address did he give, who were witnesses & have you found Daniel Jnr. on the 1851 census?

Hi.

A Daniel McCormick marries a Helen Boyle in Glasgow on 18/9/1836.

I believe this couple are on the 1841 Census at Barony , Glasgow
Address - 13 Bell Street

Daniel MacCormick         aged 37        Brickmaker        Born Lanarkshire
Helen MacCormick          aged 33                                        Ireland
John MacCormick            aged 4                                         Lanarkshire
Mary MacCormick            aged  1                                        Lanarkshire

This man's occupation caught my attention.  Could this be the same man who married Mary Ann Domigan/Donigan , and could she be already deceased ? Something to look into further, perhaps?

Looby :)

Same family in 1851 lodging at 96 Bridgegate, St Mary's or Tron , Glasgow.

Daniel McCormick          age 47      Bricklayer's Labourer       born Ireland
Helen McCormick           age  37                                          born Glasgow, Lanarkshire
John McCormick             age 14     Coal Porter                       "        "            "
Mary McCormick             age 11      Scholar
Helen McCormick            age 9
Duncan McCormick         age 6
James McCormick           age 4 months

On this Census Daniel is born in Ireland (not Lanarkshire as in 1841). Also Helen is now born in Glasgow and not in Ireland  ::)
Helen's age is also inconsistent with 1841 Census - she's only aged 4 years - however ages are notoriously unreliable on Censuses. I found these transcriptions on Freecen website - the originals on Scotlands People might have different ages.

Still no sign of Daniel Jnr - if indeed this is his father.

Looby :)
