More help with Hambling Please
« on: Wednesday 03 April 19 10:17 BST (UK) »
I have a Samuel Hambling Abt 1658. His parents are John Hambling 1631 and wife Elizabeth. What happened to Samuel? There are a few hints on Ancestry but no dates and in my tree, there are many Samuels.
Also as the name Hambling and Hembling are one of the same, how do I know when the name divides into two separate families or don’t they.
Please scan photos at 300dpi or higher. Thank you.

Hambling. Mexter. Taylor. Bailey. Bolton. Boyse. Davenport. Fisher. Godfrey. Goff. Hawkins. Holmes. Jarvis. Joseph. Leek. Morgan. Osborne. Ross. Sharp. Webber.

This just shows you the fun and games I’m having. ;D
I have found a Joseph Humbling who was married, they had 9 children, some are Hambling and some are Hembling. His wife when they married I have two documents one says he is Joseph Hembling the other says Joseph Hambling.

No wonder help is slow coming.  ;D
Please scan photos at 300dpi or higher. Thank you.

The further back you go the worst names are with regards to spelling so it is quite possible that your Joseph Hembling and Joseph Hambling are one and the same person.
Bloomfield, Knights, Whitmore, Warner (Suffolk)
Hamlin (London, Yorkshire, Scotland, Suffolk)
Mattocks, Newick, Nutter, (Kent)
Mattocks (Staffs)

And probably some are recorded as Ambling too.  Depends what accent the person giving the name had and also what accent the person writing it down had.

Alan b.

You are right it is the same person. So many spelling mistakes in these records it’s a nightmare. A birth of one and no other info, where did he or she go. Accent I think played a part. I found other people who have Hambling or Hemblings in their trees and have gathered info from them.

Pheno, not quite, but I do have one where the name is Himlin. ;D

Not spelling mistakes oldhippy, just different versions of the same name according to how it was said and then spelt.  We are talking 17 century and probably the person saying wouldn't be able to check whether the name had been written how he thought as was probably illiterate so wouldn't know the 'correct' spelling himself.

How would you explain missing info. I have a Jonathon Hambling born in 1624, he had six sons, only one of those for me is traceable Timothy who was born in 1650 and died 1771, the others apart from year born nothing can I find. Nothing more on Ancestry. They are from Suffolk, can you point me in the right direction where I might look. I’m down here in Mid Devon and I don’t drive.
Please scan photos at 300dpi or higher. Thank you.

I don't know anything specifically about Suffolk not having any ancestry there.  However using Sussex as a guide I would suggest joining the Suffolk family history group.  They often have more on indexes available to members than is online generally and may offer a local lookup service as Sussex do for free.

Sorry I can't be any more specific.  However I would search for variants of the Hambling name including Ambling.

Hope you find something,  Pheno

Modified to add:  Also search the online catalogue of Suffolk Record Office just by typing in 'Hambling' rather than anything more specific.  You might be surprised at what is available and the record office staff will often be able to produce a digital version of documents for you for a small charge.
