Where is this place?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 19 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hello

An ancestor of mine, Martin Tuohy married Honoria Banfield/Bonfield in 1877 in Looscaun Parish. They both gave their place of residence as Shlaughtee or Slaughtee. I've tried everything I can think of to find where this place is. Does anyone have any ideas?

If it's any help, Martin's father is given as Patrick Tuohy (died) and Honoria's father is Michael Banfield (alive).

Thanks

I cannot see a name looking like the one you give. It seems Looscaun is in the Portumna division.

A Patrick Tuohy was born 1 April 1880 to Martin and Honoria (maiden name Banfield) Tuohy, place of birth Coose, in the Union of Portumna..

Have seen an item on the net about the death of a Mary (Maisie) Conroy, Slaughtee, Coose, Whitegate, Galway.

I'm also seeing references to Slaughtee, Coose, Whitegate, Galway.  Like this one: https://rip.ie/death-notice/mary-masie-conroy-whitegate-galway/32400

So it might be across the county line in Co Clare.

Coose: "A large townland principally mountain, the S.E. end is under cultivation known by Dunbark and Slaightee. It is bounded on the S.E. by Lough Derg. There is nothing remarkable in the townland."

I've found a "Slaghty" just east of Doonbark on an old irish map available at Geohive.

Slaghty, or Sloughtee: "A district of the townland consisting of a great many miserable houses. It is bounded on the East by Lough Derg."
