Death and Land Records: Murphy
« on: Thursday 04 April 19 01:12 BST (UK) »
Hi, I would appreciate any help with my search on our very common name Murphy.
This is what I have
Edward Murphy born August 11, 1822 Dunboyne, Meath (I can't find a death record) What kind of records might I find in Meath and/or Westmeath?
I believe his wife was Mary O'Brien, and a son David J. Murphy who came to the United States in the early 1860s. I also believe his father was Martin Murphy and was listed in Irish Flax Growers, 1796.

I will be visiting Ireland in May and hope to be able to confirm some of this information as well as find more. Any suggestions of where I should go and what to prepare would be greatly appreciated. I am pretty sure that there was land ownership (there were rumors of an inheritance that a grandmother in the US let go because she didn't trust anyone). Some records indicate West Meath.

Thank you so much for any assistance and suggestions you can give me!

I found this information on Edward Murphy and would like to track more about his land ownership and probable family transfers. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations. How can I trace property ownership and transfers?

I found some records in: "Ireland, Valuation Office Books, 1831-1856," through FamilySearch

Thank you for all your help,

Lauri

Have you looked at Griffiths Valuation in https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php?

You can also browse the Dunboyne parish register at https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0904 & try to find hi marriage, which might state where he was living at the time [if born 1822, browse marriages from, say, 1841].

There is a genealogy centre in Meath

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864 but the early deaths haven't come online yet. Check Irish Genealogy site and Family Search index-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347
also, extracted Irish deaths 1864-1870-

Griffith's Valuation site with maps- remember that most people were tenants not landowners-
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
Five Edward Murphys in Co. Meath & 6 in Westmeath-

Some replies already on other thread- having more than one is confusing and will probably get even more so as replies are posted.
