Abbreviations on RC baptism register from 1850s
« on: Thursday 04 April 19 11:37 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what 'P.M.' and 'P.F.' stand for on RC bp records? I'm assuming the 'M' refers to mother and 'F' refers to father but could be wrong!

Also, does 'lawful' mean parents were married, and a space mean they weren't?

Thanks,
Flemming.

Are these abbreviations followed by names?

That's what I thought initially, but Flemming refers to P. M.  :-\

A snip of the actual record might be useful?

Not necessarily :-) It could just mean the priest was in a rush and skipped a word or two.

If it says 'olim' (which means 'formerly')and then a surname then that is likely the mother's maiden name, or at least her name before she married the child's father.

Is it the signature of the Priest? Or rather initials?
