James Wheeler - Halesowen, Worcs b.1811
« on: Thursday 04 April 19 16:03 BST (UK) »
Hi guys - first time poster here and a bit of a beginner so hope you can help!
I've used census returns to track my paternal line back to James Wheeler. He married Jane Thompson at St Bartholomews, Edgbaston 29/9/1836 and states he was born in 1811 in Halesowen. He also appears in the 1841 census as Head at 22 Potter Street, Birmingham. Can anyone please help me to find records of his baptism or his parents, most likely in Worcestershire?

Any help would be gratefully received!

Hello Ladyhawk,

Thanks for your response!
Yes, that is indeed him on 1861 census. The Wheeley has obviously been corrected to Wheeler at some stage.
Any other questions that will help you, fire away!

Thanks

Is this his wife's Jane's baptism?

Jane Tompson
Baptism 25 Dec 1817 Baddesley Ensor,Warwick
Father:   Joseph Tompson occ Labourer Mother: Catharine

Mmm..... if so doesn't seem to follow any naming pattern with their children

Are these the only children born to James & Jane?

Frederick 1841
James 1845
Jane Elizabeth 1855
Elijah Elisha  1859

Edit - Did they have a son Thomas ?

Thomas Wheeler
Christening Date (Original)   01 APR 1839 St Martin Birmingham Warwick
Birth Date   22 Oct 1838
Father James Wheeler  Mother   Jane

Frederick  Wheeler bn   24 December 1840    ch18 January 1841 St Martin

Hello Ladyhawk,

Thanks for your efforts.

That is indeed his wife's baptism - always wondered why her d.o.b. varied.
It's given as 1821 in Baddesley Ensor on 1841 census but then shows that she's 33 yrs old in 1851 census which tallies with what you've found - great!

The only children born to James I know are those you listed - Frederick (who died as an infant), James2 (my paternal line GGGF), Jane Elizabeth and Elijah Elisha.
I can only imagine given the birth date of 1838 that Thomas was the first born of James1 and Jane but died before the 1841 census.

Just unfortunate that I'm currently at a dead end going back any further, although Worcestershire and Halesowen in particular are apparently good for record keeping, back to 1600's. As you say, there are no naming patterns with the John or Mary parents you found in the Dudley, St Thomas. Pretty sure they aren't the parents of James.

Any ideas?

In 1841 ages for those over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 years.  If she was actually 23 then it should show as age 20

Hi everyone!
I too am descended from James Wheeler (b. 1811 Halesowen) through his son James (b. 1845), and through that James's son, James Frederick, (b.1870). He was my maternal grandfather. I too have been unable to go any further back from the first James. It would be interesting to know how other contributors to this post are descended (through which of his children) and to share any other information we have about these ancestors.

With regard to Thomas, son of James Wheeler (b.1811), I've found his burial on 25 August 1839 at St Martins Birmingham. His mother and father are Jane and James Wheeler and their address Potter Street, as given in the 1841 census. Poor Thomas was born on 22 October, 1838.
But maybe you've already found this?
