What Presbyterian Churches were in Ballymena Area around 1840?
« on: Thursday 04 April 19 21:35 BST (UK) »
Hoping someone can help with this question about the Presbyterian Churches in Ballymena.

My 2x's great grandparents were married in 1842. A researcher told us when they were married as well as where they were from. (Gortereghy & Killycoogan) Unfortunately, he did not state their father's names, or which church they were married in.

In 1851 (according to their daughter Mary) they were living at Gortaheron, Ahoghill, Toom Lower, Antrim.

I do know they ended up living on a farm off Gortgole Road, in Craigs, Ballymena.

Unfortunately, I have no idea how close to each other any of these places are. Any suggestions with regards to churches that would have been in those areas in 1840 - 1842 would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Janice

Unfortunately, 1842 is just before the start of civil registration of non-Catholic marriages and early Presbyterian marriages often only list the date and names of bride & groom. So, not surprising a father's name is missing from a marriage record.

To put the places in perspective- don't worry too much about spelling variations-
Gortaheran townland- https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/toome-lower/portglenone/gortaheran/
Road names are a fairly recent invention in the countryside (from memory we got ours in the 1970s).
If you zoom out a bit on the Gortaheran map (link above) you'll see Craigs Road above it running from Rasharkin to Cullybackey.
Gortgole townland is between Rasharkin & Portglenone- Gortgole Road runs through it-
https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/toome-lower/portglenone/gortgole/

Lots of Presbyterian churches to choose from but probably looking for one whose marriage for 1842 survive-
Rasharkin- marriages start 1845
Portglenone- First (1845), Second (1822), Third (1845)
Killymurris- both 1st & 2nd start too late

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you very much

That information is helpful. I will follow your advice.

Maybe I'll get lucky.   ;)
