Mary Greenwood nee Stanfield did remarry - but to Isaac Wakeling in Manchester on 28 June 1857.

Yes, I found her two marriages, but assumed she had married a third time to Edward Fernly. But I could never find a marriage of her to Edward Fernly.  I can't find any marriage of Edward Fernly so don't know which Mary he married.

The two Marys aren’t even similar ages though, are they?  Hiram’s wife Mary nee Stanfield was born early 1820s, and Mary Greenwood mid-1830s (she is enumerated as 26 in 1861).

It seems to me overwhelmingly likely that the Mary we see in Derbyshire with Fanny and son Henry, and later with Edward Fernley, is Fanny’s daughter and not her former daughter-in-law, and that she had Henry out of wedlock.

Mary nee Stanfield was born about 1822, and Mary, Fanny's daughter was born in 1830 from her baptism record in Manchester and censuses in 1841 where she is living with her parents Henry and Fanny and her siblings in Silk Street, Manchester, 1851 where she is living with Fanny in a Manchester lodging house, Beswick Street, after her father's death in 1847 at Henry Street, Manchester, and 1861 where she is living in Charlesworth, Derbyshire, with Fanny and Fanny's two grandchildren Henry Greenwood and Joseph Smith.

That is wonderful information, thank you.

Mary Greenwood born 1830, Fanny and Henry's daughter, was married to Henry Geoghan, born 1830 on June 10th 1856, when she was 26, at Cathedral, Manchester, her father Henry Greenwood, an Overlooker.  Her address on this marriage record is 168 Mill Street, Ancoats, different from her husband's address.  One of the witnesses is Jane Greenwood, probably her sister Jane.

I had never been absolutely sure this was correct, but feel more sure now.

So this second marriage definitely looks correct.
