Mary Gray - two birth registrations?
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 12:25 BST (UK) »
I’ve been revisiting and checking a few things, and have come across something that I didn’t notice before.

Mary Gray is my husbands great grandmother. There is one registration for her in 1886, in Mullingar RD, which is cross referenced to another entry in 1886. This has all the same details, but with the addition of a name in the father box, a location for him, and an occupation.

I don’t know what to make of this - did the registrar make a mistake (maybe someone stuck their ahead around the door and said the name, and he wrote it down) or did Mary’s mother Anne change her mind (is he the father) and want a different entry?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks
Lisa

Mary Gray born 28th March 1886

Not sure that this helps as to why - the only other difference I noted was the date/month both births were registered - the one with the father's name was registered first 14/4/1886

The first certificate issued in April has the mother as the informant-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1886/02601/1960818.pdf
The amended certificate issued in June has removed the father's name-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1886/02601/1960819.pdf

Fathers of illegitimate children could not be listed on a birth certificate unless they appeared with the mother at the time birth was registered.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Would/could/should I infer from that, that Mr Cahill was her father?

All you can say for sure is that Anne Gray claimed that William Cahill was the father.

The next step is probably to trace that William Cahill to see what was going on in his life- marriage? children? death?
