Ogston Family History

Hi everyone

I have recently created a website covering the history of the Ogston family. This site covers things like the Ogston family tree, coat of arms, history, clan links, stories, land and properties, with more information, etc going onto the site as we come across it. Hopefully this site will help any Ogstons out there that are working on their family tree or who are just interested in their family history.

It may also be an idea to post some info. on the family name (in Scotland) i.e. where established (furthest back you've found with names/dates) & other areas you have them as it's not a common name in terms in Scotland.

The reason I suggest this is because RC comes up on a google search very high up the list & will be noticed if others have names you can add here.

The earliest information I have on the Ogston surname is that they are genetically descended from the Picts who inhabited Scotland from around the 5th century BC if not earlier. In terms of written records and information the Ogston family have been known to come from Moray and Aberdeenshire. These early records are from around 1200 AD. The surname has gone through a number of changes over the centuries with the earliest written forms as De Hogeston, De Ogiston, Ogeston, Ogyston, Ogistun, until everyone eventually settled on the current Ogston spelling.

There have been many notable Ogston's over the years also. Reginaldus De Ogistone was the Chancellor of Glasgow around 1345. Sir Rannald Hogstoune was the Chancellor of Aberdeen around 1366. John Ogistone was the Sherrif of Aberdeenshire around 1470.

In more recent times there is Cyril Ogston who founded the Hamlet of Seven Persons in Alberta Canada in the 1860s. Sir Alexander Ogston (1844-1929) who was a British surgeon from Aberdeenshire, famous for his discovery of Staphylococcus. Alexander George Ogston (1911-1996) was a biochemist who specialised in the thermodynamics of biological systems.

The late Diana, Princess of Wales is also claimed to be descended from a branch of the Ogston family. She is the 4th Great-Granddaughter of Alexander Ogston (1766-1838). This would also make Prince William and Prince Harry 5th Great-Grandsons of Alexander Ogston.

Over the centuries the various branches of the Ogston family owned large amounts of land and property all over Scotland, from Moray, Banff, Aberdeen, and more. There are still some properties such as Ardoe House, and Kildrummy New Castle that were built by members of the Ogston family. The coat of arms of the Ogston family is still displayed prominently throughout both of these properties even though they have now been turned into hotels with many visitors and weddings taking place at these venues.

I believe there are still a lot of Ogston's in Scotland and around the world. Hopefully this information helps some people in their research and if there are any other Ogston's out there that have any further information it would be good to hear from them also.

I have also recently found an old book in the archives of the National Library of Scotland titled 'Supplement to the Genealogical History of the Families of Ogston'. This was privately printed in 1897 and contains historical information on the Ogston family, copies of the family trees dating back to 1200 AD, maps, stories, and general history.
