Albert Clarke RASC WW1
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

According to his British Army W1 records, my relative Albert Clarke (serial number M2 050033) was awarded the Belgian Croix De Guerre on the 12th July 1918 whilst either in France or Belgium..

Can anyone point me in the direction of how to find any further information on the circumsttances behind this please as i am no expert on military history

Many Thanks

The Croix De Guerre was awarded in batches & it was left to British Military Commanders to decide who received it.
It may state in the Battalion war diary the reason but usually at best it just mentions X number of men were awarded it.

Looking at his service record probably gives an indication of why.
Often the Belgian & French Croix De Guerre was awarded to men who had not received any other award such as the MM but were deemed to be outstanding either during a particular period or of a general nature.
Your man was highly regarded by the N.Z. ASC Coy. he was attached to at the time & proved himself on
" difficult & dangerous jobs" also he was regarded as being an outstanding Sgt. when dealing with the men in his charge.

Thanks very much again for your assistance

Good to know as I thought the medal might relate to just one incident.

Hello

Further to previously Albert is missing from the 1901 census but there is an Albert Clarke b c1882  in 1901 from Harrington (sic should be Harvington) on Find My Past. Was this when Albert was in the Gloucestershire Regiment as quoted on his attestation and perhaps in the Boer War?

I have an ancestry sub I don't currently have a subscription on Find My Past so is anyone able to look this up please

Many Thanks in anticipation

His WW1 attestation says he was in the 6/Worcs. (Militia) ie. part-timer.
No mention of the Gloucs. Regt. so where has this come from?
The 6th. embarked for SA Dec. 1901 so if he was with them at that time he should be on the 1901 census.
