George Rowan, Irish immigrant to New york
« on: Sunday 07 April 19 15:41 BST (UK) »
I have found the 1912 naturalization record of the above individual. It states that he travelled to New York on the City of Rome arriving in NY on 22 May 1893, having sailed from Londonderry. As I am unable to locate details of this ship does anyone have access to passenger records to see what information there is on him. I would also be very interested to know whether there was a fellow passenger  named Hannah Luby (or Looby, or Tooby, or similar ; her name varies a lot). She would have been aged about 20 at the time of the voyage and subsequently married George Rowan.

1900 census & marriage record has YOB as 1865.

This appears to be him on the ship. The last name was mis transcribed as "Kowen"

Thanks - it looks like Rowan became Kowen. I now suspect that Hannah Luby may also be erroneous as I have found a good match for her as Hannah Looney, arriving from Ireland on the Servia in 1893. More work to do!

I wondered about Hannah Looney as well.
I used stevemorse.org to search the ship for any one named Hannah or Anna and I didn't find anything close.

Thanks Dathai. George Rowan Is my wife's great grandfather and has always been a bit of a mysterious figure; it was believed that he had gone to USA, leaving his family in Ireland. We have now managed to establish that he did indeed emigrate and that he married and had a family in America, so my wife must have a few relatives over there that she knew nothing about!
