Help to find Johnson link
« on: Monday 08 April 19 09:26 BST (UK) »
Hi folks I’m looking for any information on my Granddad Ezekiah Harold Johnson abt 1910 and his sister Constance May Johnson abt 1915. They thought to have been born in the West Riding Yorkshire area. It’s thought that they spent some time in an orphanage in Staffordshire. I never met Constance but I’ve heard she was as olive skin and dark hair like my granddad. I was always told he was Moroccan but I’ve found through ancestry that he and my grandma were Roma. I don’t know why it was kept so secret!
Granddad used to deliver clay in the potteries with horse and cart, then started a milk delivery, later became a lorry driver. He was known as ‘Darkie’. He liked to be known as Essey. He married Ivy Sargent in Walsall approx 1935. Then moved to Shropshire. Sadly my family split up and connections ceased.
Does anyone know of him I should love to find their family roots.

Julie

:) Thank you. Yes this is the family. All mentioned are now deceased. Harold Johnson was my dad. I’m struggling very much to find Essey and Constance’s parents there seems no trace.
There is definitely family connection with names Holland Taylor Smith Wagstaff and Latham.

Julie

Hi
It looks as though Constance was older 3 June 1909/1910 and died Wolverhampton Dec qtr 1972
Married Dudley June qtr 1930 Joseph Perkins.

Online trees give parents as Joseph and Edith Johnson.
But there is no evidence for that on the trees.
I'm assuming the Joseph bit came from the marriage certs for Essey and Constance.
You may need to get one of them .

Hi Rosie and Ciderdrinker
Joseph Johnson was his dad on marriage certificate. Through a new found cousin on ancestry, I know he is the father of Constance, and their mother was Edith.

Hi guys

We cannot find any records for Ezekiah or Constance that go back to birth. No one would talk about it and it’s only recently that we found details about Ezekiah’s sister. It all seems so cloaked in secrecy. Joining some dots something must have happened for these kids to end up in an orphanage. Someone must know of Joseph and Edith Johnson.
My granddad was very dark skinned and always looked very Arab like to me as a kid.

If there's a "Roma" link then perhaps posting on the "Travellers" section - scroll right down on the main index, below Armed Forces etc) might produce some useful help? Worth a try.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)
