No records online for the armed services from the early 1920 onwards so his will still be with MOD.

You don't need his army number as long as you have his date of birth and death cert.. If your father died more than 25 yrs ago there is no problem accessing his records. Under 25 yrs it's the next of kin or by the next of kin's permission. His number is double confirmation that he is the LV Martin on the post 1920 listing.
 You probably weren't aware that records* for that time frame onwards aren't on line which explains the difficulty you've had. 

Medpat gave the link for getting service records from MOD.  Shout if you need help with the form filling!

The same route applies of course to Garnett Jones who is also a post-1920 soldier.

*Medal records for LV Martin are on line, it is the detailed service records which MOD still has and in the case of LV Martin will include his full Great War and afterwards service.

Just found this

which says the 1st Battalion  (which Louis was in at start of WW1) was posted to Ireland in 1919

Thanks Jan    , now that makes sense and accounts for the missing years .
Looks like i will have to go down the route of the MOD regarding my grandfather as suggested by other so i will do that at some point .
