Is there any significance to the mark above the l in amble, which I have marked with a question mark on the attached snip?

If it's the mark I think it is, it's part of the loop on the b.

In both records, the b and the l are both looped.

Some of the lines in the loops of the "B" are pretty faint, and make it's pretty hard to make them out!

Thank you for that.  It must be the loop of the b running into the top of the l, making the "flying bird" mark.  Part of the loop is quite faded, so I missed the connection.

Edit: I'm not blaming my eyes, as Goldie61 confirms the lines are faint!

Exactly that.
