Looks like William Maslin (a slater in 1901) was still alive when his wife Rose got together with Richard Clinton.  He was admitted to St Marylebone Infirmary on 18 October 1910 (age 32; occupation: roof slater).

He looks likely to be the William Maslin who died aged 32, Dec qtr 1910 Kensington, hence Rose taking steps to make a lawful marriage to Richard Clinton shortly afterwards.

Frederick Mullins is note a bachelor on 1896 marriage to Laura Eade (widow) nee Rose

and the likely witness is Sarah Maria Rose rather than Eade - her mother

Quote
1901 RG13; Piece: 144; Folio: 79; Page: 13
Frederick Mullins   34
Laura Mullins   34 dittoed as born London other censuses her pob Newport Wales
Alfred Mullins   16 (born c 1885)
Montague Mullins   14
Richard Mullins   11
Frederick Mullins   4

so I'm assuming that the children above are Frederick & Laura's
(her father is Alfred and she has brothers named Richard & Montague haven't matched up any Mullin
births)

Edit - census gives 5 children born to her

So it does look as if Willie EADE & Emma KING did not marry

Thank you all for this in depth research. I am really sorry, but I am now a little overwhelmed and confused by all the information. I got a bit lost when things digressed to Laura etc.

Is there someone who would be kind enough to summarise what appears to be the story (and ultimately the reason for concluding that Emma and Willie did not marry).

Thank you

Mark

Willie Eade was lawfully married (3 Oct 1881) to a Laura (nee Rose) - hence not free to marry Emma King.

Willie and Laura had a daughter, Rose Nelly/Nellie, on 24 June 1882 before they went their separate ways.

Laura went on to marry (bigamously) to Frederick Mullins in 1896, falsely claiming to be a widow. From their children's birthdates it looks likely they were together by the mid-1880s.

Willie and Laura's daughter, Rose, repeated her mother's history by marrying her second husband, Richard Clinton, bigamously in 1907, falsely claiming to be a widow - but before her first husband, William Maslin (marr 1900), had in fact died.  (She then "remarried" Richard, lawfully this time, as soon as William was deceased in late 1910).

Very succinctly written avm228

I've brought forward the marriage I posted for a William Eade

William EADE age 21 occ Cab owner
father Thomas Eade occ schoolmaster

Laura ROSE 17
father Alfred occ surveyor of ?
Witnessed by Sarah Maria (surname might be Eade/Rose) &  W Cole

but she remarries in 1896
Laura EADE (widow) to Frederick MULLINS her father Alfred ROSE

Just to confirm I have been looking at the correct William/Willie - see reply 6 for census details

Is this William's birth entry?

Willie EADE    mn WOOLNOUGH
1863  D Quarter in CLERKENWELL  Volume 01B  Page 562

Do you have his b/c confirming parents names/ father's occupation?

Hello Ladyhawk - thank you.

Hello avm228 - thank you

For Willie I have a definite death certificate for 1908 and he is aged (on the certificate) as 42 which would put his birth at 1866. I even have a press cutting regarding his death as he was found under a vehicle in Willesden with a "belly full of beer"

For 1901 census I have Willie aged 58!!! (but I think it actually reads 38 - that would put his birth at 1863) and Emma aged 37 (that seems wrong as well) Both born in Marylebone. Willie is an omnibus driver. I am confident this is the right family as the children tie in with the 1911 census which we know is right.

For 1891 census I have Willie aged 27 and Emma 26. Both born in Paddington and Willie is an omnibus conductor. The children tie in with 1901/1911 censuses.

For 1881 census I have Willie Eade aged 17 living with mother Betsy. Willie born in Clerkenwell

For 1871 census I have Willie Eade aged 7 living with mother Elizabeth (could be Betsy in 1881?). Willie born in Clerkenwell. This family has a Lourina and an Augustus - names that Willie gives his own children later on.

I don't have a birth certificate for Willie. Agree that the one you found looks promising but the inconsistency with ages on the different census records plus the stated age at death has thrown things a bit.

Also, we seem to have different birth places, but having said that, Marylebone, Paddington and Clerkenwell are adjacent.

Any more thoughts? Thank you so much for your help

Mark

Just found 1861 census with Thomas Eade, schoolmaster. He has daughter Lourina and son Augustus. If this is the right Thomas and is Willie's father it makes sense because Willie went on to also have a daughters called Lourina and a son called Augustus. This would tie in with Laura's father in law Thomas Eade being a schoolteacher. Also we have Willie and Laura having a daugter called Nellie Rose and Willie had a daughter called Nellie with Emma.

Does that sound convincing enough?
