Lamesley makes sense since that is where he was married.

Thank you

Doesn't ring a bell with me Irene, there are a lot of small hamlet's now long gone which only show up
on very old map's,my hunch would be a farm or such like,I have an ancestor fromTeesdale who has
Botany as her birthplace which was her father's farm near Middleton, any clues in later cencus?

Ah now I'm from Birtley up the road and remember there is a Dunkirk Farm at Northside that is at the
north of the town.

In the 1851 Census William has a daughter Mary Ann, born 1838. There is a William Nicholson in 1861 living in Dawdon, Easington, with a daughter Mary Ann born 1837. This William states he was born Northumberland. There is a Dunkirk in Northumberland and FreeReg has a baptism entry in 1802 for a William Nicholson baptised in Newborough which is about 3 miles or so from Dunkirk. Might be worth looking into.

The ref for the 1861 Census is RG09/3749/F4/p4
