I found a baptism for him in Lamesley in 1797, 'of Dunkirk'

Thank you all

Doesn't ring a bell with me Irene, there are a lot of small hamlet's now long gone which only show up on very old map's,my hunch would be a farm or such like,I have an ancestor fromTeesdale who has Botany as her birthplace which was her father's farm near Middleton, any clues in later cencus?

As I pointed out in reply #2 and (#4) Dunkirk in Durham is in Lamesley
See the side by Side https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=17&lat=54.9121&lon=-1.5695&layers=6&right=BingHyb there is still a farm there.
