Are there any photographs of Manchester from the mid nineteenth century?
« on: Wednesday 10 April 19 21:29 BST (UK) »
There are a lot of wonderful photographs of Manchester, especially of the houses, from the very end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, but I can't find any from the mid nineteenth century.  Those I found on Flickr show some of the areas my ancestors lived in, but long after they had left central Manchester.  Streets like Millgate, basements and courts.  My ancestors were living in central Manchester from around 1830 to the last ones in the 1870's.

I don't know much about the history of photography, but I think the earliest photographs are from about the 1830's?

You could try the St Andrews Photographic collection:

Unfortunately many seem to be late 19th century.

While photography was developed in the 1840s, I think I'm right in saying that outdoor photography was not common until much later in the century.  Most photos needed long exposure times and it took a while to cut down exposure times.

Not sure of the dates but try Manchester’s photographic archive collection. It is vast and you can do it by district.
Hope you find what you want.

Francis Frith was taking photos from 1860s.
Some from 1870s on here https://www.francisfrith.com/manchester/photos
There is a book of Francis Frith photographs "Around Manchester".
