Fred R Tucker - Torbay Life-boat crew.
« on: Thursday 11 April 19 10:59 BST (UK) »
Born Brixham 1882 - died 1940.
One of 12 or 13 siblings to John Brinham Tucker and his wife Sarah Ann (Nowell) who were married in 1863.

Fred Rupert was awarded a commendation for his RNLI services, and is named on the RNLI memorial at Dorset HQ.

I can't find any newspaper articles about the incident from the RNLI "George Shee" when he suffered extreme exposure, resulting in his death, or about his funeral.

Any info will be appreciated.

There are two almost word for word articles in the "Express and Echo" and "Gloucestershire Echo" on Aug 7 1940 referring to the weekly allowance being made to his widow as his "death was felt in large measure to be due to exposure while on service during severe weather in Jan last"

see page 29 of the attached which describes in brief the launch on Jan 29 1940 LINK
No reference is made to the crew

The August article implies that the death was after the event which may be why it was not covered

That is really helpful, thank you.
Is it possible to have a screen shot of the news article please?  :-\

It says on the Torbay lifeboats site, Torbay history page:
http://www.torbaylifeboat.co.uk/torbay_history.htm

"1938 Member of the crew, F R Tucker, was out on service on 29 January and was subjected to extreme exposure. He died in March 1940."

Looks like it must be a typo, but it does seem the poor man lingered for a while after the rescue incident.

Fantastic.
Thank you so much.

I have been searching on the findmypast newspapers.
Can't find anything at all, so assume they are not up to such a recent date?

No problem
His death would probably have attracted more attention during war time if there was a loss of life or vessel at sea; the circumstances probably detracted from his sacrifice.

Even so, I would have expected a funeral report.

In the members' only area of the website http://www.devondb.co.uk/devonfhs/members-area/misc-docs.jsp there are images of some Brixham Newspapers including 1940 and there is a report of the funeral in the 14th March 1940 paper. page 12 of 24: March: 1940-0066
