Short latin will
« on: Thursday 11 April 19 17:09 BST (UK) »
I would really appreciate some help in picking out the salient points from this will

I believe the date is 1481 but struggling with the month & day.

Testator was William Cokett Rector of Ingham

It then mentions Walter Cokett Thomas Cokett & Johen? Cokett of Timworth and then Johen? Coket of Ampton

Apart from the actual date, what does it mention any relationship to the other names and why are they named in the will?

many thanks

It's a nuncupative will, or given orally.
Soul to God, Blessed Mary and all saints, body to be buried in the church. Goods to be disposed of by his executors.
He makes his executors Walter Cokett, Thomas Cokett and John Cokett of Tymworth, and makes John Coket, senior, of Ampton, his supervisor.

The date is 23 February 1481.

Note that I see it as John Colett of Tymworth.

The k and the e are a bit run together, but it's definitely Cokett of Tymworth. He was the son of John Coket, senior, and was one of the executors of his will.

Thanks can you please clarify.

Are you saying that (or the document says that) Walter, the testator, is the son of John senior of Ampton?

No, there is no mention of family relationships here (other than senior). In the Common Pleas case mentioned yesterday from 1484, John the son of John Coket of Ampton was one of his executors.

Just had a quick look pre G&T at the 1484 lines, I have not seen these before.

Coket, John, of Ampton, merchant, executors of; (Coket, Alice, formerly wife of Testator; Coket, John, son; Coket, Walter, of Ingham; Claxston, Hamo; Clerk, Clement)

Just to understand they all relate to debts that JC of Ampton a merchant had outstanding at the time of his death. The executors are the others then named.

This matches a will proved in 1483.

thanks

The executors are the ones in parentheses. They were the plaintiffs, so the debts were owed to JC senior.
