With more hunting around on Ancestry I have found
William Skinner 1699-1781, his father was William Skinner 1675 – 1735 married Elizabeth Fortescure 1680 – 1755. His father was Thomas Skinner 1651 1687 who married Suzanne Cokram 1650. His father was William Skinner 1591 no spouse.

There is a tree on Ancestry with this descent but it claims the Thomas at the top was born in Cornwall, married in Hertfordshire and died in Essex (but had his children in Dorset). They name his son as the Rev William MacGregor Skinner (who, if you Google, had a son who became a General, travelled the world and only took the name Skinner as a disguise).

Another tree has a William Skinner (d1781 Bere Regis) was was born in Poole and had his children in 'Westford, Middlesex'. By all means believe these trees if you want to; but I wouldn't.

I don't know how much you know for certain of William (d1781) but at least the 1723 marriage of William Skinner to Elizabeth Oakley states that the groom was from Bere Regis.

I would guess that a much better bet for his grandfather was the William Skinner of Bere Regis who married Anne Carman at Mappowder in 1655; but it is a guess!
