John Waite City of York Apprentice record help with latin
« on: Friday 12 April 19 14:59 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My Latin is pretty much non existent and would be most grateful if anyone could give me a clue as to what the apprenticeship record actually says please.

As far as I can tell it is Johis Wayte son of Johis Wayte of Wigginton?
From that point I am struggling, although could have guesses for other bits.

Many thanks for any help
Kev.

Hi, many thanks for the reply, didn't make out Ebor (should have guessed it, especially as I knew Wigginton is near/part of York and being from not too far from York myself, should have spotted Ebor).

Hadn't guessed at John Page, had a few other possibilities but yours looks more likely. Wonder what part of York John Page is from, guessing it's recorded just before Ebor after his name, can't think of any likely places though).

Now not sure if this is my John Waite as he marries and lives more Doncaster area, and since finding this apprentice record think i may have found a possible baptism in the Doncaster area, need to check it out further when time permits.

Many thanks again
Kev.

John Wayte, son of John Wayte of Wigginton in the county of York, yeoman, put himself apprentice to John Pape of the City of York, silk weaver, to serve him from the [blank] day of May in the [blank] year of King Charles, for a term of seven years next following. Sworn 30 May 1641.

ADDED - I don't think it's Page. Compare the letter g in Wigginton.

I was unsure about surname Page. Hence question-mark.

Granted Pape is a much less common name, but the third letter matches well with the p in posuit (line 2), septem (line 4) and prox(imo) (line 4).

ADDED -- here's another John Pape, or maybe the same one?

Results of internet search for surname Pape.
Pape was a mainly northern name in England. Particularly Yorkshire, also Cumberland.
Highest number by county (222) on 1841 census was in Yorkshire.

26% on 1891 census were in Yorkshire (Ancestry).

Many thanks for all the help with the translation. Now to see if it is my John Waite, although now looking unlikely as I don't think mine is from the York area, more Doncaster way, particularly around Fishlake. As mentioned earlier I think there may be a possible baptism in the Fishlake area that I need to check out further in order to fully rule out the York connection.

Many thanks
Kev.
