In the '41 Census, John Steptoe of Water Eaton, Kidlington, is shown as "born in County" ie. Oxfordshire.

In the '41 Census, John Steptoe of Water Eaton, Kidlington, is shown as "born in County" ie. Oxfordshire.

Yes, I noticed that, I wish I could find them with certainty in 1861/71 if still alive (I think he dies 1877 Thrupp which is just up the road). He is so hard to trace as I wanted to verify his parents but I would be guessing. The Sunningwell and Thatcham John Steptoes turn up elsewhere in 1851. He married in 1819, the 1803 John baptised in Chieveley died and the 1805 one would only be 14 when he married. I am not sure that I will get back further with this one! Thanks for your help :)

A check of FindMyPast confirms that the 1861 Water Eaton, Woodstock Registration area Census records are "missing in their entirety".
A large part of the Woodstock Registration area Census is missing.

General Register Office (GRO)
Mary Steptoe, Jun Qtr 1864, Woodstock, 3A  400 - age 71.

This gives a birth year of 1793.

The Mary with John Steptoe at Water Eaton is 45 (born 1792-1796) on the '41 Census and 52 (born 1799) on the 1851 Census.

That is great thank you very much. I now believe that Mary Steptoe' s Maiden name is gardener and it fits with a Mary Gardener baptised Charlbury 1793.
