HELP seeking ancestor
« on: Monday 15 April 19 15:19 BST (UK) »
hi im Agustin Ross,

im seeking my ancestor Francis Ross, born the 25 dec 1852, in scotland, father william ross, an mary smith, both from scotland.

his father was 62 at 1891 and mother 50 , dead by 1895 give or take.

he was born in scotland, but traveled to Uruguay, and was married there by 1882, died in Uruguay.

He worked in uruguay, in trains and farming.

I need help finding census, or possible birth certificate, etc.

I know his parents died in scotland.

Thank you!

Hi Agustin

You previously thought that Francis came from England? www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=790757.0 What makes you think he came from Scotland now?

Can I ask, what is the source of the info you have included here? You have an exact date of birth for him and parents' names. Also, ages for his parents. Where did you get this info?

I cannot see any corresponding baptism or birth for him to these parents in the old Parish Registers, however, it was before the start of official registration in Scotland from 1855.

In the 1861 census, I can only see one possible entry for a Frank born c. 1853 in Kincardineshire. He shows as grandson, can't tell who his parents could be.

Monica  :)

hi

thanks for the reply,

yes i thought he was english, but as to his marriage certificate here in Uruguay, the 10 of Jan 1882, and following yr 1883 first daughter certificate it states he was scottish.

In his marriage certif says he was born the 25 Dec 1852, and detail dad to be william ross and mary smith, of scottish origin and from there currently, and absent in the marriage over Rio negro, Uruguay.

Hi Agustin

Great for you to have been able to confirm those details from his marriage registration. Was there no occupation showing for his father William on this entry?

Did he use any English names for his children? I have seen some details for two daughters but their names were Spanish names (Lina and Anselma)

Thanks, Agustin. So, if he followed Scottish naming pattern (see for example www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm) then Guillermo and Maria, early used names, could connect to his parents' names. Were Fausta's parents also named in the 1882 marriage entry? Roman Catholic marriage?

Monica

Added: From Scotsmum's earlier link, Fausta's parents Ramon and Manuela?

Something to consider? People weren't as keen on knowing their exact birth dates as we are now. I also think the names Janet and Jess were interchangeable, but definitely not Mary.

fausta caceres, the spouse, whos father was luis ramon caceres, argentinian, and Manuela Espinosa, argentinan.

I made the family search tree, but some are wrong, so dont focus on that.

The marriage certificate says as following:

In Averias, Los Merinos farm, de 10th of Jan 1882, don francisco smith ross, single , nationality english rom scotland the 25 dec 1852, catholic, son of guillermo / william ross, english, married, 49 yrs old, merchant, and his wife maria / mary smith english, 48 yrs old, from scotland both and Fausta caceres, nacionality uruguay, single cathoic, daugther of luis caceres, argentinan, single, dead, and Manuela espinosa, argentinan, 45 yrs old, no profession,

etc etc
