Abbreviation on US 1930 census

I've attached a clip from the US 1930 census which shows (what looks like) 'ab' after a girl's name. My initial thought was 'adopted' but the abbreviation for this is supposed to be 'ad'. Any thoughts on this?

Could it be 'ab' ie 'absent'?

Not found the missing lady in 1930, but then the family are nowhere at all in 1920 and the father's name is incorrect in 1910 and the parents' ethnicities are mixed up. I dare say it will all be there somewhere hiding behind a mistranscription of dodgy handwriting. Such fun.
