How to pronounce Cavan
« on: Wednesday 17 April 19 05:54 BST (UK) »
Very quick question for those of you who will know ...

How do you pronounce Cavan?

Cav-ann?
Ca- Vann?
Like Gavin with an "in" rather than an "an" sound at the end of the word?
or some other way?

This is probably more off topic but I thought putting it here might catch the eye of an Irish expert.

JM in NSW.  (my Irish ancestors came from there to New Zealand and then to NSW, back in the 19th Century).

We have a Cavan here in South Australia which is pronounced CAVan, more of an "in" sound as you suggest. Whether that's true to the original I have no idea.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

From my experience of Ireland and Irish friends, Kav-n (Not Cave-an ;D).
Emphasis on the first syllable.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks for the replies.  :)

Kav-an or if your from Cavan Kaav-an

I see you are in Ireland Sinann. Is the pronunciation on JM's link correct? It sounds like Kay-vin, the chap sounds Irish, (but I haven't got a good ear for this kind of thing).

(I found some other sites which gave a different pronunciation)  :-\

KGarrad - your suggestion sounds a bit like Kevin but with a Kav instead of a Kev .... but not with a softer "in" at the end of the word - the same as Sinann's suggestion?

Maybe cabin -> cavan?  :-\ Similar to pinefamily's SA town too ...

 :P

I would rate that link at all.
I had a cat called Kevin, turned out it was a girl so I called her Cavan.

I had a friend called Cavan and it was pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable. There was also a well-known Irish minstrel, Cavan O'Connor, after whom my friend was named, and he had his name pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable.
