Hi.
I was looking for help in how to trace my Scottish roots.
Their name is McDonald and they came over from Ireland to Scotland in the 1800s.  But I am sure they must have originated from Scotland and went to Ireland first.  I got told that there was a story that they went to Ireland in the 1600s.  How would I find when they first went to Ireland and when the first ones came back to Scotland again.

Thanks

Martin

'I got told that there was a story that they went to Ireland in the 1600s.'

Who told you?

'they came over from Ireland to Scotland in the 1800s.'

When did they come, and their names, please?

Hi Martin

Best to start with what you know for certain and most recent and then work back into their histories. You will find Ireland soon enough.

Not sure you will be able to get back to the 1600s to verify anything of the family stories though. Irish records can be complicated. Lots of help here on RC to help you try to see what you can find, more probably than not in the 1800s.

Chempat,
I got told from a cousin in the USA

The earliest I have is an Edward McDonald that was born in Ireland
644/8 Scottish census 1901, died in Scotland in 1940.  His Mother was Margaret McMullen who I have no info on and his father I think was Edward James McDonald.
There is one of their graves in St Patricks, Eglish in Dungannon, Tyrone.

Edward McDonald, who must be a great great grandfather.  His son died in 7th February 1846 aged 21.  which takes it back to 1825if his son Jon was born in Ireland
Henry McDonald died 20th November 1984 aged 70 and his wife cecilia died 4th January 2003 aged 89
They had a farm in the township of Cormullagh

MonicaL.
Yes , I am working back from Margaret McDonald

Thanks

You say you think Edward’s father is Edward James. You know he died in Scotland in 1940. Have you checked his death certificate? That should give you his father’s name and occupation.  (Its hard trying to assist if the information we have isn’t reliable or verified from easily available on-line sources).

When was Edward born and did he marry?  If so, where and when? (Again his marriage certificate should give information on his father).  Have you explored those possibilities?
Elwyn

Is this Edward in 1891?

Living at 188 Preston St in  Registration district: Bridgeton  Civil Parish: Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Richard Young   64
Mary Young   60
George Young   30
Edward McDonald   29  Occupation:Platte  Visitor Ireland

''they came over from Ireland to Scotland in the 1800s.''
Edward was born 1860/1861, so did not come over until after that, surely?

Your family is in a tree on Ancestry, little information on Edward's parents, except suggests it is Margaret McMillan not McMullan - this could just be a difference in pronunciation.
(Married Margaret Boyle in 1895)

Added:
Tree suggests had 6 daughters in Scotland, then 2 sons in Ireland, 1896 to 1910??
