Plymouth schools in 1871 where Mary Ann Oliver might have been enrolled
« on: Thursday 18 April 19 20:40 BST (UK) »
The 1871 Census record for my great grandmother Mary Ann Oliver (born in Plymouth in 1860) has her living with her parents Francis and Thomasina Oliver at 35 Millbay Road Plymouth  as a 9 y.o. "scholar". I am seeking information about what local schools would have been nearby and where records for those schools might be found/accessible.
The family left Plymouth for Victoria (Australia) in 1876 on the "Lincolnshire". They settled in Bendigo.
Her father Francis Oliver was born in Polperro c. 1825, as was his father William Oliver in or around 1798. Some records point to my Oliver ancestors from Polperro being related to the renowned (infamous?) smuggling family, but we have not been able to confirm this, so any assistance on this would be also welcomed.

I think you will find that most children under age 12 at that time were described as 'scholars', even if taught at home. I have looked at National School registers for the time but no mention of Mary Ann.

Many thanks, DOB7.
Local knowledge is very often invaluable.
And thanks for checking registers on our behalf. Much appreciated.

Hi Rodney

I have ancestors from Polperro and I've found the Polperro Family History Society invaluable, they have a vast database of Polperro families so it might be worth your will joining the society
