On Irish Genealogy if you put in Unknown Unknown and search deaths from 1864 to 1966 there are 8576 results.
245 in 1864
5 in 1966
Even more upsetting is the fact that most of them are aged 0.

I had cause to look through Islington PRs on one occasion... shocking how many entries there were for "body found in river" "infant found in ditch" "baby found in churchyard" etc.

I'm on the Isle of Man, and the Burial Register for St George's Church, Douglas (my local church) contains:

13 Jun 1810     3 sailors belonging to "Minerva"
17 Aug 1810     a sailor of the "Carolina"
29 Sep 1811       a child, name unknown
3 Oct 1811      a Shipwrecked mariner
4 Oct 1811      a young lad (a Mariner)
18 Sep 1812    3 children
7 Oct 1812      a sailor found at sea
28 Nov 1812     Two Children
26 Mar 1813       a child
18 Apr 1813       a child
1 Jan 1814       a child
24 Feb 1815       a child
11 Feb 1816      a sailor found on the shore
23 Jun 1827      name unknown
11 Jun 1848      A man unknown washed up by the sea
30 Nov 1838     Ten poor seamen wrecked on this coast belonging it is believed to the barque "JULIE of BRUFFE". Supposed to be Dutchmen were interred this day. Names & ages unknown.

There are many similar instances in the London records too. The strangest one was in a register (I can't remember which one) where the cause of death was also given, even to a "stranger to this parish". So they knew what he'd died of, but not his name.

The death registrations of "Unknown"  are at the end of the "U" section of the GRO Indexes, and after the "Z" section from the March ¼ 1870.

I've found similar entries in the parish registers for Foulness in Essex. Often one or more per year.
