EDGELAW- near Carrington.
« on: Friday 19 April 19 09:06 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if Edgelaw has people living there? Or is it only on the map because of the existence of a reservoir?

I happen to have a copy of a post code directory from about 1990-ish.

Edgelaw is listed as Edgelaw, Gorebridge, EH23 4SW. This means that when the directory was published this was an address where the Post Office expected to deliver, so there must have been people living there then.

So I checked with the online postcode finder and Edgelaw is stil listed. So yes, it almost certainly has people living there.

Wonderful, thank you! I had not heard of Gorebridge so went to Mrs. Google and found:

Edgelaw Cottages
Gorebridge
EH23 4SW

My great-great-grandfather lived and farmed at Edgelaw until emigrating with most of his family to New Zealand in 1860.  Very few families listed at Edgelaw in the 1851 census.

I did indeed enjoy the photographs. Thank you. The scenery is not that very much different from the land* farmed by my ancestors here in New Zealand.

*Called "Edgelaw" by my great-great-grandfather to remind him of home in Scotland. The name remained for the next 4 generations until my father sold the farm. The end of an era.

Just one thing, what the Scots call a burn, we call a creek...... :)

Thanks again,

I should have pointed out that the reservoir wasn't there in your great-great-grandfather's day! It was built in 1880.

Thanks for that Forfarian. I guess the ancestors had to rely on the fetch & carry method from the burn to obtain water.
