Ernest Gilbert Croshaw's service
« on: Friday 19 April 19 11:25 BST (UK) »
My great-great grandfather, Ernest Gilbert Croshaw, was born on October 2nd, 1886, and died in 1948 (in Hull). He was in both the RAF and navy, I believe, with his service numbers being 231819 and F.31819, respectively.

I have found at as much as I can, but I don't know much else about his service or where he was buried or if he won any medals for his service.

Any information about this would be greatly appreciated, if possible, and if hope I've posted this in the right place!

Thank you all in advance!☺️

This may be his RN service record.
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6831799
It appears he was in the Royal Naval Air Service RNAS
Thus the confusion re RN and RAF.
You can download for £3.50.

Cannot find medals. Others with more knowledge may be able to help you.

Thank you, I'll have a look! I didn't even know anything about a Royal Naval Air Service, so this is very helpful!

He joined the Royal Naval Air service on 26 Jun 1917 (the record that Seaweed links to).  On 1 April 1918, along with all the RNAS and the Royal Flying Corps, he was transferred to the RAF.  There he served until 6 Feb 1919 when he was transferred to the RAF Reserve and then discharged on 30 April 1920 (during the Feb 19- Apr 20 period he was effectively out of the service but people had a reserve commitment in case the war broke out again).  His RAF record is at the National Archives https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C12463131 but unless you go to Kew you have to see it on Findmypast which requires a subscription.

His trade in both the RNAS and the RAF was labourer.  His RAF service was at the seaplane depot
at Rosyth.  I can't read the place of his RN service (HMS President II isn't where he served, that is the accounting base for the RNAS, it is the word below that that I can't read) - Seaweed can you help?

There is no record of medals which suggests he served in UK only.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
Zoe

This would appear to be the place to ask about his burial:
Hull City Council Bereavement Services Chanterlands Crematorium Chanterlands Avenue Kingston upon Hull HU5 4EF (01482) 614 976 bereavement.services@hullcc.gov.uk

His death is registered in the first quarter of 1948.
