Many with German names (including the King!) tho born British changed their names during or post WW1 to avoid the hostility shown towards the enemy of that war. There were many cases of a father who hadn't naturalised (probably never saw any reason prewar) who was interned whilst his sons fought against the Germans in the trenches - in the internment camps these men suffered badly from taunts or worse and of course the family slid into poverty as the main bread-earner was removed..
