Mystery of Victor Dale Moesch of Douglas IOM
« on: Saturday 20 April 19 14:47 BST (UK) »
I cant find him anywhere.  Victor was a son of Carl George John Moesch (born Liverpool) and Florence Moesch (born Leeds).  The family lived in Douglas for years, at 2 Dukes Road and all of their children were born there except Victor, his mother returned to her family in Hunslet/Leeds to have him in 1899 although he was christened back on the IOM.

As a trainee Printer in Bilston near Wolverhampton he joined the Army aged 17 in 1917 and served initially in the Yorkshire Dragoons before transferring to Duke of Wellington's Regiment to serve in France where he was wounded in the last days of fighting in November 1918. After recovery he was discharged in Sep 1919 and disappeared.

I have searched Ancestry Internationally, Find My Past and everywhere I can think, his siblings and parents can be found but not Victor. I have his military records, I checked London Gazette incase he changed his name by Deed Poll.

Please can anybody help.

Emigration perhaps?

If you know his full birthdate  you could try the 1939 register.  If he did change his name it’s possible he retained his christian name

Did the rest of the family remain in the IOM?

Just a thought - could his injuries/war experience have resulted in a breakdown and he was admitted to an asylum?  If so - it would likely be on the IOM if his family were there

EDIT

A tree on Ancestry shows his brother Hubert died 1993 in Devon as Marsh

Wow, ladies thank you.  Another family member is shown once as MARSH and I had wondered if she had married but I'll bet it was anglicized (is that the word ?)    Thanks, wonderful !   I have FindMyPast and will go and find that news report.

There is also a marriage in Dudley 1926 - Victor Marsh to Janet Marsh but don’t know if it’s the same Victor

EDIT

No it’s a different Victor.  Couple are on the 1939 register

There was a Florence Evelyn Moesch who changed her name to Marsh by deed poll in 1919. She had the deed registered by the court so there was a notice in the Gazette. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31616/page/13081
