I'm trying to find the death date and story for Captain James Stewart (b1863, St Nicholas Aberdeenshire) who apparently (oral history) died at sea.

Any help finding the death date & any information of the ship under his command, and/or his career for James Phillip Stewart, b1863 would be most appreciated.

Have you consulted "Lloyd's Captains Register" available from London Metropolitan Archives?
This should tell you all the vessels he sailed on as either Master or Mate.
Read London Metropolitan Archives information leaflet 50 - Lloyd's of London "Captains Register's and related sources
https://www..gov.uk/search/results.aspx?k=lloyds%20captains%20register
I understand "Ancestry" has copies of Masters Certificates. If you could tie him down, the certificate will tell you his certificate number which is unique to him and will be a big help identifying him.
I guess you have looked the Deaths at Sea Registers on FindMyPast?

Excellent leads Seaweed. I'm not familiar with researching deaths at sea so all of these will be put to good use today as I search on.

I do have a Masters Cert for him. (At least I think it's him - darn that common name.)

Thank you for your direction.

Between that and knowing from Ambly's find that his wife remarried before 1913, we've got the death period narrowed to 1901-1913.

Hopefully I'll find the date today.

Thank you again for the direction Seaweed.

I thought to check the pages before & after the Masters Cert & have confirmed by birth date that it is the James Stewart I'm looking for.

His Master's Cert number is 010944.

Now I'm off searching the databases you referenced to see where that number gets me. :)

Hi there. I just want to make sure that this post will send. I just did a long winded thread and for some reason it didn’t go through.  Soooo before I do I just want to clarify Captain James Stewart’s’ middle name. It is not Phillip. That middle name was given to his son James Philip Stewart Burton. Will try to post now.
Ok...it went through. I’m able to modify this, so I’ll carry on.
I have been researching this topic for almost 10 years On behalf of my husband who is a Stewart-Burton. Story goes that May Margaret’s Husband Captain James Stewart was mutinied at sea and didn’t come back to her and young James Philip. She moved on in life and remarried to Francis D’Aguliar Burton in 1909 (as states in his attestation papers). I haven’t gotten very far in determining what happened to Captain James Stewart although based on him ‘missing, I’ve found a few newspaper articles where someone is looking for his whereabouts in the early 1900’s. Positive news is that my husband submitted his DNA and was able to be matched up with ancestors that go back to Captain James’s grandfather ‘Alexander Stewart’. If there are any questions you’d like to ask RedMystic, I’m all ears. Would love to know who your friend is that you researching for as I noticed you are in Nanaimo. We are in B.C. as well.  Will wait to hear back from you.

Morning Corine

If you post 2 more times (even just saying hi), we will be able to use the RootsChat private messaging to  share contact info. That will likely be best as some of what we can discuss includes living people. :)
