Witshire family from Wilshire
« on: Monday 22 April 19 02:19 BST (UK) »
Im looking for where my ancestors (1715 onwards) actually lived.  John Wiltshire born 1715 and is buried in Wootton Bassett December 1850. We live in Australia and are visiting Wilshire in June /July this year. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Kathy and welcome to rootschat.

My, your ancestor lived to quite an age! 135 years if my maths is correct  ;D ;D

Perhaps you could let us know a little more: names, dates etc that you already have and we may be able to help with some look ups.  :)

Whoops. Got a little excited to find this site that may be able to help. John WILTSHIRE was born circa 1715 a native of Wootten Bassett.. He married twice.. Mary Martin in May 1735(she passed away1736). Then married Jane Hedges in February 1739.  Their son William was born 1743. Many Williams and Johns feature throughout the family tree. It appears the first to migrate to Australia was John (born 28/11/1810 .. died 29/7/1897). Thanks for any help. Kathy

They also have John Wiltshire marrying Mary Martin on 13-April-1735.
And to muddy the water; John Wiltshire married Mary Weston on 29-Dec-1720.

The information you supplied tends to agree with my research. Do you have any knowledge of where specifically they may have lived.. Would love to see the actually land/house/farm. Thanks so much for replying.

The OPC only have the transcripts of the parish records for marriages in Wootton Bassett. The place that they are living is not shown, I wouldn't think that it is on the original either. Although I have seen some parish records with place of abode noted, helpful if it did.
I would think they lived locally, a agricultral area then, Wootton Bassett was at that time the major market town in the area though.

As Youngtug says, it's always a bonus if the parish records show a place of abode, though more often than not they don't.

I've had a look in the newspapers of the day but couldn't see any reference to your John WILTSHIRE, though I think this may be an obit for his son William:

"Died on 21st ult. at Wootton Bassett in his 82d year, much regretted by his numerous friends and acquaintance, Mr. Wm. Wiltshire, brickmaker, whose conduct through a long life of piety, conformity to the duties of religion, and humble submission to the divine will, secured to him the pleasing hopes of reaping a glorious reward."
Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette. (Aug. 11, 1825)

I've also just noticed you posted in the "completed" section of the forum. I'll ask a moderator to move this thread to the lookups, hopefully it may come the attention of more researchers.  :)
