WINDOWS 7 and WINDOWS 10

I am not at all technical, I use a computer quite a lot but am not OK with all that goes on with the technical side of it

My windows 7, I am led to believe, ceases towards the end of the year, my family tree programme that I have is a HUGE tree, not only mine but friends, will also not be compatible with Windows 10,  but I can see I will have to upgrade to Windows 10

My husband has windows 10 on a lap top, whereas on my 7 I have a whole list of favourites down the left hand side, 10 I cannot find favourites, also will mean  changing my family tree programme which is over 20 years old

I am loath at my age, bus pass and free TV licence to start all over again with a new programme but I am getting worried already

Most people I have spoken to are not at all happy with Windows 10, and that includes young people

I'm in exactly the same position. Husband has Windows 10 on his laptop and it's a pain in the .....
As far as I understand , Windows 7 will cease to be updated at the end of the year , but that doesn't mean it stops working. ( Windows XP still works and support for that ended years ago ). I shall do nothing for the time being.

I had windows 7 home premium, upgraded to windows 10.....had nothing but trouble so took my home computer to a tech shop, changed it back. All good now, and am extremely happy. I don't think that windows will just let people flounder, there woul be an uproar!

I'm retired now but I worked in technical support for most of my career going back to days before Windows. I have worked extensively on standard office applications, as well as  specific specialist products provided by  whoever I worked for at the time.

People do have problems changing, but I find it is pretty much like going to a different supermarket or changing cars. It's a little bit irritating at first but you quickly get used to it. Everything you need is there but it's not in the place where you expect it.

Basically you have a lot of little pictures or text representing programs and you click on them and your program starts. There are plenty, in fact hundreds, of tutorials on YouTube which will help you. Go for it Louisa Maud.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10.  One of my irritants is that parish records on discs from local history societies no longer function as they did.  Some are no longer searchable.  Having checked with the local history society I bought them from they confirm that it’s a compatibility problem with Windows 10.

I believe that MS are still trying to tweak things to get a better compatibility bit I do know that it isn't perfect.  It is so annoying.  Have you tried accessing the data 'manually' rather than through the supplied application?

I refuse to update... wait till they put the lid on before I do...!!! enough..

I am on Win 7 on this .. compaq presario and I buy one after the other on Ebay for around £80.. if they begin to fail.. I specify Win 7 presario CQ56,, I have 4 in the cupboard that still have life left in them.. but not fast enough now or something silly..  Hopefully this latest Ebay bargain will outlive me.. BUT dont care now.. 
I also have a ridiculously EXPENSIVE brand new.. (cannot even remember model make or name)  Win 8/ with all the apps and flashy screen everything moves about. and yet it still has the same screen saver.. as I created and need that for me.... to use..

Cannot get used to it .. the keys are in the wrong place.. cos I type BLIND  and so gobbledegook if the keys in wrong place.

I do not WANT or need a stupid APP!!!

I also have a tablet and a phone with 'APP's everywhere never used ... old and past it and dont care so there    
If i can get through with this .. Fine..  mind you there is a.n.other one in my EBAY basket ready as this one is a little tired .. now
ha ha .. useless old biddy

Hi Martin

I’m pretty computer literate so it’s annoying but I can manually search.  It just means the front end doesn’t load but I can still access the pdf files.

but they are called Bookmarks in Windows 10.
