My GGG Grandfather Samuel Gregg. Totally stuck
« on: Tuesday 23 April 19 16:23 BST (UK) »
I am having trouble tracing my GGG grandfather.

His name was Samuel Gregg.  He married Janet Archibald on 09.07.1831 in Avondale, Lanarkshire.
I can find him in the 1841 census.  It states he was born around 1811 in Lanarkshire.  He is staying at Fon Contineation of Stewart Street, Carluke.  Family shows as Janet (wife, born around 1808/ 1811), Jean (daughter, born around 1835) and John (son, born around 1839.  I know he died 26.02.1909)

His son John's marriage certificate from 1865 to Mary Porteous shows that the surname Gregg has changed to Greig.  John's father Samuel is listed as a shop keeper, deceased.

I can't find birth certificates for John or Jean.

There is a son William Gregg born to Samuel & Janet Gregg on 05.11.1832 in Avondale, Lanarkshire.  There is no note of William on the 1841 census and I can't find a death certificate for him.

On Ancestry.com I have found a William Gregg that was born on 10.01.1842 to Samuel & Janet Gregg.  I can't find a birth or death certificate for him at all.  In the 1851 census it looks like this William is staying with his mother Janet's sister Mary in Carluke, Lanarkshire.

I know bits about John Greig as he was my GG grandfather.

Can anyone help my trace the family of Samuel Gregg and Janet Archibald?

Thanks for reading!

Re: birth certificates.  Civil Registration in Scotland was introduced in 1855.  See link below for BMD entries prior to then

SP shows a death for Samuel 3.9.1842 aged 55 Carluke
Spelling is Grieg and it shows Janet Archibald under other info so no doubt it’s the right Samuel

However - if the age is correct it puts his birth year substantially earlier than shown in 1841 which puts Janets’s in question

I wonder if it should be 35 and not 55

Have you checked the 1851 image for Janet Archibald b 1811 to establish her marital status

There is a possibility that Janet re-married 15.4.1853 to James Reid per SP.  1861 shows her b 1810 Govan

In 1851 she is Janet Greg b 1808 and has John Greg aged 30 with her

In 1851 James Reid’s wife was Barbara

Suspect Janet died 1868 aged 60 mmn Barr.  1871 shows James with a new wife Catherine

Hey Carole

Thank you so, so much for all of that info.

Janet’s son John (who is my GG grandad) was married in 1865 at the age of 26 to my GG grandmother Mary Porteous. I don’t think it can be my Janet that is on the 1851 census in Govan with John who is aged 30 on it as his age doesn’t tie in. The marriage status of that Janet on the census doesn’t say that she is a widow.

I have had a look at the marriage on SP of Janet and James Reid and I am wondering if this is her or whether it is the Janet Greg that is on the 1851 census with 30 year old John who, by the looks of it, aren’t my relatives.

I have had a look at the death certificate for Samuel Greg who died 3.9.1842 and I think this is my GGG grandad and like you said they have added 20 years to his age.

I have found a Janet Archibald on the 1851 census. It says she is staying in Libberton, Lanark. She is 40 and a widow. She is the head of the household. There doesn’t appear to be anyone else living with her. I wonder if this is my GGG grandmother?

On John’s marriage certificate from 1865 it says both his parents are deceased. So I don’t think the Janet you suggested who died in 1868 is mine.

I just wonder if this part of my family is just going to stump me.

Thanks again for your help

On my GG grandfather John’s marriage certificate (he is Samuel Gregg’s son) it says William Greig was a witness.  I think this is the William you mention - his brother.

I can’t seem to find William past the 1851 census.

There is a death or burial showing in the OPRs in Carluke:

Janet ARCHIABALD
40
13/03/1849
629/30 420
Carluke

No additional names showing.

If the correct death, may explain why William is elsewhere in 1851. Have you confirmed Mary Hamilton's surname as Archibald?

Have you found John in 1851?

On the 1851 census, there is a 12 yr old John Greig, born Lesmahagow, Lanark, working as a cow herd at the Allison family farm in Avondale. A/try have him as Graig. This is the only entry I can see for John in that year. Lesmahagow fits with his birth place in later censuses doesn't it?
