Pannal St Robert Banns
« on: Tuesday 23 April 19 16:44 BST (UK) »
Apologies if this is in the wrong board ...

I'm currently researching Mary Lambert, the daughter of Elias Lambert and Jane Scatchard. Mary was born about 1836 in Pannal although I've yet to discover any baptism record to confirm this.

Mary seems to have maried at least 3 times, first to Robert Kettlewell, then to a Mr William Smith, and finally to one Henry Birdsey Neale.

The entry in the register of Banns for the marriage to Robert Kettlewell is interesting. It can be found on Ancestry by searcing the card catalogue for "yorkshire marriages" and following the link to West Yorkshire Marriages and selecting the parish of Pannal St Robert for 1859. There are two sets of banns, consecutive entries, for the marriage.

Would the first set be struck though because the wrong parish had been entered for Robert (Harewood?), thus requiring the banns to be called again? The actual marriage entry is 3 pages further on, the date appearing to be May 1st, amended from March 19th?

Or could there be another reason?

Perhaps the Parish Clerk was having a bad time in 1859!

Banns - 220 at Pannal - groom from Harewood - 20 and 27 February, 6 March
Banns - 181 at Harewood - bride from Pannal - 20 and 27 February, 6 March
Banns - 221 at Pannal - groom of this parish  - 3, 10 and 17 April.

So the groom changed parishes and the Banns were re-called at Pannal.

And then he got the actual marriage date wrong  :o

Hope he didn't get his baptisms and burials wrong as well.   ;D
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
