Help with census
« on: Wednesday 24 April 19 15:05 BST (UK) »
When out in the countryside houses/dwellings are not numbered as there are not that many.
How to establish who lived where is a mission impossible

Landmarks would be pubs, farms mentioned by name etc.
You get a map of the area, read the description of the enumerator's 'patch' and use a best guess as to which way the area was "walked" by the order of the entries.

As Pauline has said it helps to follow the route. Something else you may find helpful is looking at occupations. Sometimes these can give clues to place some of the dwellings. A local mill or old smithy can be helpful to figure out who was living where.

Compare maps of the time with modern maps and all the editions in between so that you can see how the area has changed.
I've also used tithe records with their accompanying maps, comparing information with 1841 & 1851 censuses to see if some occupants stayed put .

Thanks everyone for your helpful tips, Ive done as suggested and traced census backwards to find landmarks etc. the place I am looking for was only 2 properties away from the next street, so that was really a great idea, I'm going to have a look for it tomorrow
