I wonder whether this is his mother's death?

Eleanor Nicholson aged 36, Sep qtr 1849 Tynemouth 25 428.

There was an outbreak of cholera in the Reed St area during 1849, which may or may not be relevant:

The abode of Eleanor, and of 13 yr old John, was given as Reed St on their burials per Durham Records Online. It is the same street where the surviving family has been found in 1851.
