British POW illness Repatriations
« on: Thursday 25 April 19 23:33 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just found on Forces War Records that my grandfather was repatriated from a German POW camp in November 1944. I was totally unaware that medical repatriations took place.

My grandfather died in 1948, and my father in 1988, but all my father knew was that my grandfather served and was captured in North Africa, was imprisoned in Italy, escaped and recaptured twice, was transferred to Germany and that he had arrived home on a stretcher.

This is what I gave been able to find out:

Serjeant S F Stubbs
Service Number 6016367
Essex 2/5th Battalion (TA)
Reported Missing 01/07/1942 Casualty List No. 899. possibly at Deir-el-Shein
Reported Prisoner of War 21/10/1942
P.O.W. Camp number 70 Fermo, Italy. Record Office number: 21

Possibly transferred to Stalag 4B September 1943
Repatriated on two lists:
1. 29/09/1944 Casualty List No. 1564. Previously shown on Casualty List No. 960 as reported Prisoner of War in German Hands (Germany).
2. 09/11/1944 Casualty List No. 1599. Previously reported Prisoner of War in German Hands (Germany) now Repatriated; previous Theatre of War: Western Desert.

Kelling TB Sanitorium, Holt, Norfolk
Died Jan/Feb/March 1948

I would be interested in any further information on repatriations, and anything to do with my grandfather.

Then you should watch the movie, "The Captive Heart" - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038396/    The sign for me was the large 33 on the side of the Troopship repatriating POW's from Germany.   I have 33's showing up all the time by day and night and in just about every movie and TV show.
