look up please
« on: Friday 26 April 19 11:58 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if I can have a fresh pair of eyes, please.
I have an x 2 great grandfather, his name is a quandary. On his son Thomas's birth certificate in 1867, he gives his name as collexter George Brown. this is the only birth certificate of any of his children where he uses collexter. He does use it on some of their baptisms, but nowhere else. On the 1851 census, he is with his mother Ann j, brother Frederick and sister Ellen and you can just make the collexter out. His father Edward is on holiday in Clerkenwell goal. I have is birth about 1845 possibly Paddington or Marylebone Middx and as an adult, he is either a carpenter or painter. It is probable and I will have to live with the fact he may never have had his birth registered and he probably was never baptized as his father was possibly in prison. Years ago I ordered about 5 birth certificates for a George Brown Marylebone as this was where the family was living and on censuse, he gives Paddington as did his mother on the 1851 census.
Collexter is such a strange name and my gran remembers he was collexter.

Any fresh ideas would be welcomed as I have been trying to find info on him for the last 25 years.
PS do you know how many George Brown's there are for about 1845 in Marylebone and paddington.

Kind regards

Sue Ault

It helps us if you give the reference when mentioning census entries especially with a common surname

Thanks Jen.

I was looking for the family on FindMyPast and getting nowhere which is why I suggested that the reference was posted.  It is no wonder I could not find it as they have him transcribed as Collette Brown.  It really does help us when asking for look ups if the reference is given when census are mentioned as we can waste so much time looking for records which are mentioned due to wrong transcripts like this

he probably was never baptized as his father was possibly in prison.
Probably no reason why mother should not take him to be baptised on her own.

FWIW, there are 3 trees on ancestry with Col(l)extor George Brown as son of Edward (William) Brown & Ann (Jane) Carnzer.

George may have been registered without a forename altough I cannot find a registration for Helen/Ellen either.
